Total Knee Replacement

  • Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is a highly effective surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring mobility in individuals suffering from severe knee joint damage. This procedure is commonly recommended for patients with advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis when conservative treatments no longer provide relief.

Why is Total Knee Replacement Needed?

    • Chronic knee pain that limits daily activities
    • Severe osteoarthritis causing joint stiffness
    • Difficulty in walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods
    • Deformity of the knee joint, such as bowing or knock-knees
    • Failed previous knee surgeries

    The Procedure

Total Knee Replacement involves removing the damaged cartilage and bone from the knee joint and replacing it with artificial components made of metal and high-grade plastics. The surgery is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and typically lasts 1-2 hours.

    Post-Surgery Recovery & Rehabilitation

Post-operative physiotherapy plays a crucial role in ensuring successful recovery after TKR. Rehabilitation focuses on:

    • Pain Management: Ice therapy, medications, and gentle mobilization
    • Early Mobility: Walking with the support of a walker or crutches within 24-48 hours
    • Strengthening Exercises: Quadriceps, hamstring, and calf exercises to regain muscle strength
    • Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises: Passive and active knee bending to prevent stiffness
    • Gait Training: Proper walking patterns to restore normal movement
