Total Hip Replacement

  • Total Hip Replacement (THR), also known as hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to relieve pain and restore mobility in individuals with severe hip joint damage. This procedure is commonly performed on patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hip fractures, or avascular necrosis when conservative treatments are no longer effective.

Why is Total Hip Replacement Needed?

    • Chronic hip pain affecting daily activities such as walking and climbing stairs
    • Severe osteoarthritis causing stiffness and reduced range of motion
    • Hip fractures or injury-related joint damage
    • Avascular necrosis leading to bone death
    • Inability to perform basic movements due to hip joint deterioration

    The Procedure

During a Total Hip Replacement, the damaged hip joint is replaced with artificial components made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anesthesia and typically lasts 1-2 hours. The surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone and replaces them with a prosthetic hip joint designed to restore normal function.

    Post-Surgery Recovery & Rehabilitation

A structured post-operative physiotherapy program is essential for a successful recovery after THR. Rehabilitation focuses on:

    • Pain Management: Ice therapy, medications, and gentle mobilization
    • Early Mobility: Walking with the aid of crutches or a walker within 24-48 hours
    • Strengthening Exercises: Targeting hip and leg muscles to improve stability
    • Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises: To prevent stiffness and improve flexibility
    • Gait Training: Learning proper walking patterns to ensure safe movement

    Expected Recovery Timeline

    • Week 1-2: Reduced pain, controlled swelling, and initial mobility with support
    • Week 3-6: Increased weight-bearing, improved muscle strength
    • Month 3-6: Return to low-impact activities like cycling and swimming
    • Beyond 6 months: Full recovery, ability to walk comfortably without assistance
